#OnlyActionMyFriend: A Call for Practical Education Reform in India
In 2024, India finds itself in the throes of an educational system that promises degrees to 150 students even after collecting hefty university fees. However, the sad reality remains that many of our seniors who completed their degrees still struggle to find employment. I often contemplate joining the chorus of voices demanding change, but then I pause, wondering where to display my degree since there are no job applications filled out.
Whether one completes a course in two or three years, the plight remains the same. Our seniors often return to our alma mater seeking their degrees, only to be turned away. I, too, contemplate raising my voice, but the realization sets in that without job applications, where would I display my degree? The process of applying for jobs is daunting, with the odds stacked against candidates from lesser-known colleges. Confidence, guidance, and preparation are often lacking, yet one must still sit for exams, even if ill-prepared, due to societal pressures. Parents, who paid exorbitant fees for their children’s education, expect returns in the form of secure jobs, but only a small fraction of households in India have government-employed members who can afford to dedicate a year to exam preparation post-graduation.
It’s disheartening to witness our youth confined to the realms of contemplation due to a lack of career clarity. Research, entrepreneurship, or job preparation—government or private—remain elusive choices. Negotiating this landscape is challenging.
Hence, during election times, I find myself echoing the sentiments of many others, urging the government through comment sections on various platforms to implement #OnlyActionMyFriend. What our students need is practical experience through internships or research projects, even if it means closing down some universities to redirect funds. Let them at least sell pakoras to earn some income. What options do we have left? Should we fulfill our parents’ wishes or strive to achieve our own dreams? We need good mentors and opportunities in every college and university, even if facilities are lacking. Every child deserves the opportunity to explore their interests and talents. How can they know what they want in life if they aren’t given the chance to explore? Should they study for a job? What if they fail in business? How will they cope with the consequences?
In conclusion, it's imperative that students gain practical work experience in their academic life, without the burden of financial costs, enabling them to make informed choices about their future careers. Only then can they pursue paths aligned with their passions and capabilities, ensuring fulfillment and success in their lifelong endeavors.
